Garden Water Features

The Joy of a Water Feature

Water features, when done well, are beautiful additions to any garden, no matter what size. The sound of water trickling or tumbling over stones, in fountains, spill ways or water walls is also well known to bring calmness and relaxation to a garden as well as coolness. Water features with the sun glinting off the water, also attract birds to a garden which is always a bonus as birds are great for a garden.

RR Landscapes Mornington Peninsula custom design and install various garden water features including Water Walls, Spill Ways and Fountains.

Different Types of Water Features

Water walls can be created for either indoor or outdoor environments and is great for small spaces. Mirror bases will give the impression there’s more water flowing.

Spillways can be either large – as part of a water wall or small using only an urn as the source of water. For water walls, spillways can be a wall descent – clinging to the wall itself, a falling sheet where the fall is slightly away from the wall and falls freely down, or as a projecting sheet where the water falls in an arc away from the wall.

Water Fountains are the traditional water feature in a garden, bubbling away in a pot or cascading in a gentle arc from a spout. And if we’re talking traditional that spout will probably be from an urn held aloft by a stone maiden or a fish clutched in the grasp of a putti.

Water features don’t have to rely on stone maidens or putti or even natural looking outlets but can also fit in a modern contemporary settings. Long, elegant pools, steel pipes all suit the clean, pure lines of water.

Outdoor garden features can be so well integrated into a garden landscape design that they look as if they are literally part of the landscape, as if they were there to start with and the garden was constructed around them, rather than the other way around.
